When people think of beach photos they think of bright, sunny, blue skies. Well that is awesome for getting a tan but not so much for portraits. A little cloud cover goes a long way. It softens the light and you don't have everyone squinting. Plus it helps with the heat! If you have been to the beach in Florida during the summer you know exactly what I am talking about!!
This family had some clouds and it is a perfect example of nice soft light!
